Connect 60+
Friday 9.00am-11am
Week Four
This week Connect 60+ focused on Vocational Wellness. We had an excellent turnout of 29 people who all had a fun exercise workout with Hannes. He also gave some tips for fitness in everyday life, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift, when you can. We also saw some very creative work during the Pinch Pottery workshop and many people asked the facilitators about avenues for pottery activities in the general community.

Week Five
Next Friday Connect 60+ will focus on Spiritual Wellness, an aspect of ourselves we might sometimes neglect. It is a very personal thing and everyone has their own way of expressing spirituality, it could be through prayer, meditation, or mindful Yoga. Whichever way we practice our spirituality, it opens us to "new insights and perspectives about life" In this session we will learn about Chair Yoga, a practice which nurtures ' inner peace and gratitude' while also giving you a good stretch.

Still to come in this cycle is
Feb 21st - Chair Yoga - Celesta Wijaya
Feb 28th - Intergenerational Herb Potting - Grubs N Bugs and The Cultivating Curmudgeon
Mar 7th - AI - Alex Jenkins from WADSIH

Out N' About - Wellington Dam
Monday 7th April 8am -5pm
Don't miss out on this opportunity to see the worlds biggest Dam Mural!
You may not expect a world-renowned artist to camp in the bush for four months while he’s creating the biggest dam mural on the planet. Nor might you think he’d dangle from ropes wearing a headlight, painting at 4am.
But Australian paintsmith Guido Van Helten isn’t your typical artist, and nor is the statement piece he coated 8000 square metres of the Wellington Dam wall with. The 34m-high, 367m-wide wall finished construction in 1960 and forms the second largest dam in Western Australia, after Lake Argyle. It’s fed by the Collie River, which also happens be the source of Van Helten’s inspiration.
Van Helten sorted through countless photographs, stories and pieces of memorabilia before selecting six images to paint in dizzying scale. Looking at the dam wall, on the far left are two of the migrant workers who built the dam, posing as it overflows in the background. Beside them are a couple of local kids playing in the sand; they’re now in their 20s.
The wide, central image is of a handful of Aboriginal children on a picnic day out from Roelands mission; they play in the water with a little girl with blonde pigtails. To the right, a boy handles a fish; he’s now a 20-year-old apprentice at one of the local power stations.
Beside him, a picture of a dad with two kids; the girl to his left, Ashlinn Cain, is now grown up and helped Van Helten on the project. She, and the artist’s friend and fellow artist, Ian McCallum assisted with installing the mural.
The final image on the far right-hand side is of an Aboriginal couple; the original photograph is believed to be from the 1890s.
Join us as we leave the city via Forrest Highway for an exciting day of adventure. First stop Gnomesville where you can add a Gnome to the collection if you want to. Then on to Collie for lunch at the Federal Hotel which has many yummy options for lunch including garlic prawns and chicken satay sticks. We will then visit Wellington Dam to see mgnigficent mural and finally to Harvey Cheese for tastings and ice cream.
Members $100, non-members $110.
